The 15th annual Festival for All Skid Row Artists (FASRA) blasts off on Saturday and Sunday, October 26 and 27, from 12–4pm each day. Presented by the Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD) the festival is two days of live non-stop music and performance, visual art, and participatory art workshops, showcasing the diverse talents of Skid Row residents.
Taking place in General Jeff Memorial Park / Gladys Park (corner of 6th Street and Gladys Avenue), the festival is a grassroots cultural event where 150 Skid Row Artists perform or display their artwork to enthusiastic audiences. Artists are now rehearsing their acts and preparing artworks for the festival. And Los Angeles Poverty Department members are doing extensive street outreach throughout Skid Row, ensuring many people will participate for the very first time and become part of Skid Row’s artistic culture. As always, the Skid Row Drummers will open the festival and longtime Skid Row artists like Crushow, Silkiie Harris, Robin Hoodloom, Blacblossom and Blu J The Boss, Mello Bluez and Swami Doni, Urban Voices Project and Los Cubanos will be performing. Another longtime artist Chella Coleman will end the feast with her punk band on Sunday.
Festival attendees participate in a range of artist facilitated workshops. Visual arts workshops will be offered by Studio 526, Creative I, Piece by Piece, Doodles Without Borders and there will be a woodworking workshop by Would Works. Jen Hofer and Michele LaRusso will lead writing workshops, Soma Snakeoil will conduct a movement workshop focused on dealing with anxiety and there will be a space for kids, where Sara Fetherolf will help them make small instruments and play music.
Community groups will be there to encourage engagement and advance the quality of life in the Skid Row community. Lisa Davis, from the Department of Cultural Affairs will engage with festival goers, simultaneously reporting and listening to ideas for the City’s in-the-works Skid Row art center. Amelia Rayno with Pastor Blue, will be conducting a Naloxone/Narcan training and Overdose Education, there will be a table for voter registration and the LA Central Library will be there to inform attendees of opportunities and services provided by the library. LA DOT will be there as well, collecting input on how they can make the streets safer for seniors.
