Urban Voices Coffeehouse
Come celebrate with Urban Voices Project the culmination of a spring performance workshop where all choir members prepare to perform with a professional live band!
Members work with a professional coach over the course of 6 one-on-one sessions to develop musicianship and professionalism. The process includes identifying the music that means the most to them and can showcase their full voice in all of its vulnerability and freedom, learning performing techniques and working with a live band, and preparing themselves for the etiquette of working with professional musicians. Finally, they present their growth, courage, and self-empowerment by singing on stage for their fellow students, their community and to the public.
Skid Row Coffee, a community partner and Skid Row-based social enterprise, will be providing the coffee for the reception. Another community partner, Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD), will be hosting the event at their venue, Skid Row History Museum and Archive Museum & Archive. On exhibit at the Skid Row Museum will be artwork from another partner, Studio 526, featuring pieces from many talented visual artists from the Skid Row community, including several members of Urban Voices Project. Emcee’d by the LA Weekly’s front cover feature, Christopher “Urban Sage” Mack, a staple in the Skid Row neighborhood and a community organizer for health, art and activism.
With choir songs bookending the incredible showcase of individual solos, this will be a most inspiring way to kick off the first weekend in May, supporting the hardworking students of the program and the great work of Urban Voices Project, using Music as the Bridge to bring our most vulnerable neighbors into health, community and understanding.
