Intellectual stimulation:
Independent filmmaker and arts educator Ben Caldwell will discuss his 30 years operating the legendary KAOS Network in Leimert Park, home to Project Blowed, a renowned weekly open-mic workshop that fostered rappers and rap groups such as Aceyalone, Medusa, Freestyle Fellowship and Jurassic Five and has counted among its patrons Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Lenny Kravitz, The Pharcyde, Biz Markie, John Singleton, Eazy E., Bone Thugs n Harmony, and Will.I.Am.
A member of the L.A. Rebellion school of filmmakers that emerged from UCLA in the 1970s, Caldwell has taught film at CalArts and Howard University.
Aural sensation:
The Burt/Williams Project will perform in conjunction with Caldwell’s talk. Hylen Burt, guitarist and vocalist, and Bobbie Williams, alto and tenor saxophonist, are longtime jazz lovers and friends, who’s musical collaboration dates back to their first meeting when both performed with the Los Angeles City College big band. After school, their mutual love for jazz music led to the forming of the quartet they named The Burt Williams Project. Both Air Force veterans—currently backed up by seasoned rhythm section—the Burt/Williams Project has performed at VA Hospitals for various functions, and in a number of clubs in the Los Angeles area and around the state.
Gastronomical titillation, gratification and satiation: Cooked up by rent party cult chef Arthur Africano and his band of assistants.
